UNICEF’s base in Cambodia is located in one of Phnom Penh’s most modern office buildings, Exchange Square, in a space exceeding 1,000 m2. In keeping with the UNICEF philosophy to democratise the decision-making process, efforts were made to invite all staff to give input on the design. The workspace is bright, open and splashed with Unicef’s characteristic blue alongside eccentric egg chairs. Brainstorming spots, variously-sized meeting rooms, conference rooms, standing stations and offices are efficiently spaced so that the office can combine semi-open, open and closed areas while still catering to more than 100 people. L-shaped offices are welcoming yet private – an important requirement – the glass walls covered with semi-transparent panels and blocked by strategically-placed storage boxes.
